Hurricane Edouard

It just hit about a half an hour ago and may turn into a hurricane (just did) and/or tornadoes. So far just rain and lighning and thunder. I didn’t get any good photos because the shutter speed was so slow that the lighning is gone before it clicks. But before it started raining, the first bolt of lighning was spectacular, rivaling the fireworks here a few weeks ago. That’s what sent me running for the camera. But as Jim and Zoe were running in from the “dog lawn” to escape the downpour, all I got was a rain-soaked window!

There is a downside to eating one’s way through one’s pantry. For the past few weeks we’ve been sure that we’d be moving out of state. Let’s use up some spaghetti tonight, and I’ll use those two 28-oz cans of tomatoes to make a sauce. Checkmark. Now what shall I do with those hearts of palm? All so we wouldn’t have to move heavy canned goods! So we’re not in as good shape for a hurricane as we were a few weeks ago. I’ll replenish…

We’re staying right where we are, at least for 6 months to a year. Yea! Jim took a consulting gig in town and should start tomorrow or Tuesday. More when it’s “real.” I’m planning a “Staying” party in a couple of weeks when things settle down and we’ll host an open house to celebrate our newly-found good fortune.

So wish us well and I’ll share some more information after Jim’s had a few days on the job. And after I’ve had a few days to pick up the pace around here and do things that have slipped on the priority list with Jim AND Zoe underfoot. Yes, I love them both but Zoe leaves her fur everywhere and Jim deserves my nickname for him, The Human Tornado.” I asked him to put the rug vacuum away the other day and he wound up the cord and left it sitting in the middle of the living room. Just found dirty socks on our new sofa. You get the picture.

Tomorrow’s Monday. Let’s hope Jim doesn’t need to hire a boat to go to his new place of employment. Dee

Marty Robbins’ “El Paso” – tragic love story of a cowboy and a girl, Felina.

Juni Fisher, “Red Velvet Slippers”, Juni’s recent version of Felina’s side of the story.

Check out “El Paso” and “Marty Robbins” on wikipedia (see my story of The Little Cowboy that started this).

Now, in what era do you think “El Paso” could have happened (don’t just say 1959 because that was when Marty Robbin’s hit was aired)

AND

What kind of food would they have been serving in the era that you choose, at Rosa’s Cantina? Have a recipe to share?

Come on, people, you can do this. I even have to think about this and have both songs on iTunes now!

Deadline August 14 for responses. Have a great weekend, Dee

PS the photo is of Deputy Dawg, one of the infamous Trail Riders in the Rodeo Parade. They camp with wagons and horses right next door and Deputy Dawg has made us some awesome food.

Texas Rancher

I gazed out on seven goats
my wife told me she’s wanting
Grandson spends his time and totes
Branches, weeks belonging

Rancher, farmer, still it’s work
Fences to mend, stock to herd

My years as a dairyman
Are not long forgotten
The ranch is what a man
Does to know that I have gotten

My stripes, earned those
This isn’t poetry, it’s prose

Rancher, farmer, still it’s work
Fences to mend, stock to herd

Now I have beef bulls and cows
No dairying left to do
But running a goat hobby farm
Is not what I aspired to

Rancher, farmer, still it’s work
Fences to mend, stock to herd

Please see notes re: The Little Cowboy and references, if desired. No way I’m sending this in to the Cowboy poets for the Lariat Laureate award but I’m OK to put it out in the world through you. Remember it’s my poem and I own it so whoever writes the music, please write in!

This is loosely based on Jim’s Dad, who may or may not like it. Right now it’s too late to check. Anyway Joe, I love you and mean no disrespect to you or Margie. It’s just the way the words went in my mind. Joe, in addition to being a farmer and rancher and Civil War history guru, is also a poet. He has a great son, two of them but I’m only married to one.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend! We went to brunch this morning at ten then had two lovely ladies over for a while so Zoe could jump on them and go crazy, then went to the movies (we saw Mamma Mia and Jim and Trish saw X-Files). Then we went to a Mexican place for late lunch/early dinner and got back at five! Where did the day go?
