Jesse’s First Photography Show

“I’m having my first gallery opening of sorts…. I’m having a ton of people there to kick off a 3 month showing of about 15 of my photos on the gallery wall there. Hope you can make it!

Please feel free to invite anyone and everyone! The more the merrier :-)”

That’s from Jesse. I can’t believe he could winnow his way down to fifteen. But digital has changed my life. I don’t take 20 photos and finish the roll with my pets before developing at the store. I take a hundred or so and get rid of half of them and send five in an email to family and friends.

He likes my choice of camera and at least one of my fireworks shots. Mama Dee says THANKS!

Mom’s Lazy Chicken

Legend has it that this is a Romanian recipe. It’s lazy because everything is in the pan and cooked together.

1 chicken, cut into serving pieces or 4 chicken breasts
1 onion, large, cut into 8 wedges lengthwise
2 large carrots, peeled and cut into 3″ spears
2 cloves garlic, smashed
8 medium red potatoes, halved
1/2 c chicken broth
1/2 c dry white wine
Thyme, salt and pepper
Butter

Prepare all the meat and veg, place closely in pan. At 450 degrees, continue to add ingredients to pan. Salt and pepper and thyme and butter at the last moment. Make sure things stick up. Place in the oven for an hour, basting at 20 and 40 minutes.

The chicken will be succulent beyond belief, and veggies roasted until soft and toasty. Yum. This is one of my favorite dishes.

My brother (a great cook) asks “what’s lazy about it?” It has more than five ingredients and everything is ready at the same time so you don’t need separate pots and pans for everything.

My Goat Names

Eleanor and Rosa

Eleanor and Rosa

Everyone was being messed with by “bossy” goat so my silly names for the babies went out the window. In the back, brown and white is Eleanor, for Eleanor Roosevelt. At front in brown and grey and white is Rosa, for Rosa Parks. Two great ladies. Here they are.

Having strong people around, men and women, really helps. Keep cooking, I’m working on a recipe for you but have to make it first. Dee

Urgent Phone Calls

While unloading the car (two of us, two trips) from a three-day trip I heard my cell phone ringing on the kitchen counter. Missed it. Rang again. Missed it.

It was my friend and neighbor telling me to go outside right away. Turns out a bunch of neighbors were interviewed for a story in the local paper that is supposed to come out tomorrow.

We’ll see how it turns out. It’s all about this park that recently opened and there is some controversy as the park was planned well but no-one accounted for simple things like trash and parking before opening it. So a bunch of us were asked questions by the reporter.

Jim’s in a suit and tie today on interviews. He looks great, after his haircut yesterday. Normally in his line of work dress slacks and pressed dress shirt work, with solid leather shoes. But interviewing, it helps to wear a suit.

Things are looking up. It’s a tough market out there job-wise. So all you kids out there get a good education, major in the hard stuff (math and science) and then the world’s your oyster.

Me, I majored in the soft stuff and did OK. Twenty years after graduating I married Jim, who is worlds smarter than me but doesn’t write as well. He can do calculus in his head but doesn’t know his shirt size, and the furthest he’s come in cooking is a grilled cheese sandwich!

Hope you’re having a great summer. Dee

I meet people

for I have a dog, named Zoe. Jesse just wrote in today, a great photographer who actually liked one of my fireworks shots. We’ve invited other guests to meet and take photographs, including Anderson Cooper’s crew.

We learn more from their art every time. Sure you can take the family picture in front of a fountain or leaning in front of the leaning bell tower of Pisa, but making a memory of a photograph is an art and I know photographers and restorers and rest assured, I’m an interested neophyte.

I’ll continue to foster these artists, scientists and fellow amateurs. After all, when cooking one wants to nourish the soul as well as the other senses. My art is cooking, so perhaps we can learn from each other.

Art is what you make of it, Dee

Zoe introduces me to the most interesting people. D
