Preparations

Everyone here is having people over for the fourth, because it’s THE place to be. Regarding Franciscans, my college education is due to the friars.

Perhaps I was a reluctant student because I was very shy. In grade school my music teachers inspired me to learn, as did a terrific math teacher in 7th grade. In high school my French and history teachers, and gymnastic coach held sway.

In college I lost my way a bit Freshman year but coasted to Dean’s List five semesters out of eight. But Fr. Cap and Fr. John made me want to learn. I thrived in their classes and just wanted more.

Back to the college philosophy and entertaining for July 4th… I ran into two young girlfriends this morning while out with the dog. They’re both having people over tonight and said, “OK, let’s meet at the pool.”

I scribed a menu days ago and am cooking and tidying up and making sure I have enough ice. Guess that’s what happens a couple decades later! It’s worse than that— I posted my menu here! I think Jim’s geek-ness is rubbing off on me. It’s only been 7 years. No, I’ve always loved hosting parties.

Have a patriotic 4th, Dee

Franciscans

My favorite church is Santa Croce in Florence, Italy. I used to stay with family nearby and go to Mass or tour the church or the leather factory. It is the largest Franciscan church in the world with a fascinating history.

Three works of art there make my heart stop. One is the wooden Donatello crucifix. But the Donatello Annunciation is my passion. Don’t mind me, the frescoes of St. Francis and so many other historic references are right here in this church. Michelangelo, Dante, and more.

Cimabue’s altarpiece was severely damaged by the 1966 flood of the Arno river.

The Pazzi chapel is also a treasure due to its architectural structure and della Robia art.

Don’t miss anything in Florence! OK, do miss something so you can return. Dee

Luck

I consider myself lucky to be born and have the childhood I lived. To have an education. To have had meaningful and hard work to gain my “chops.”

To have loved and lost enough to realize true love when I saw it. To go through adversity with your life partner and see the way through the tunnel.

To live every day as a new adventure. And when you’re down, have a dog like Zoe with no hips to remind you that things could be worse – and she’s the happiest dog we’ve ever seen!

In the down times we must remember who we are and what we’re here to do. And work to get through it.

These are tough times and many are suffering the result of the war, gas prices and bank failures.

I can think my way out of it, vote my way out of it, and cook my way out of it. Oh, yes, and write my way out of it.

In the end, it’s mainly what we do that governs our own lives. Let’s live our lives to the fullest.
